Superheroes Number 41 - Steve McCormick

Many people doubted Kevin Drinkell’s judgement when he signed striker Steve McCormick from Queen’s Park at the start of the 1995/96 season. Steven had impressed in a reserve match against Albion earlier in 1995, and Drinkell had remembered his name. His logic was that pace was vital in the Second Division, and McCormick had plenty of that.

He scored 25 league goals in 1995/96, as Albion cruised to the Second Division title. He formed a deadly partnership with Alex one, and became a firm favourite with the crowd.

In 1996/97 he found goals more difficult to come by in the First Division, and became unsettled as his agent tried to set up a move for him. Steve spent time on trial with clubs in Norway and France, before eventually being signed by Dundee early in 1998 for £25,000. He failed to make an impact at Dens Park, and since then has been with Leyton Orient, Morton, Airdrie and East Fife.

Albion fans will never forget season 1995/96, and McCormick was instrumental in making it such a great year – his trademark cartwheel celebration was a familiar sight.
