Superheroes Number 34 - Andy Kennedy

For a spell in the late 1970’s Andy Kennedy was the ‘local hero’ of the Albion fans. The bustling striker had developed through Beechwood FC and signed up at Annfield in 1976. Initially he was reserve to the likes of Billy Steele and Bobby Gray, and he made his debut at the end of 1976/77, against Brechin City at Glebe Park.

His first goal in Albion colours came in 1978/79 at home to Queen of the South, but it was not until 1979/80 that he became an Albion regular. He sealed his place in the team for that season with an outstanding display in a 4-0 win over Dunfermline Athletic on the opening day of the season.

Andy’s Albion career all but ended in February 1981 when he broke his leg playing against Raith Rovers at Annfield. Although he did make a comeback midway through 1981/82 he had lost all his sharpness and it was no surprise when he was released at the end of that season.

In total he made 86 first team starts, plus another 21 appearances as a substitute. Andy scored 19 goals for the club at a time when goals were at a premium. His 13 goals in 1979/80 made him top scorer for the club as they finished mid-table in the old Division Two.
