Superheroes Number 32 - Jimmy Bonthrone

Jimmy Bonthrone was bought by Albion in February 1960 to add experience and guile to an inexperienced side. His arrival was not enough to save the club from relegation at the end of the season, but Bonthrone was a key figure in the side that walked off with the Second Division title the following year.

Bonthrone played up front, and despite his size and bulk he was a remarkably agile and nimble player. He scored 24 goals for Albion in just 48 appearances, giving him the perfect ‘goal every two games’ ratio that strikers look for, but few achieve.

Jimmy had turned senior way back in 1947 when he joined East Fife from Kinglassie Colliery. He was a tremendous servant to the Bayview side before moving on to Dundee, from whom he joined Albion in 1960.
After giving two seasons of enjoyment to the
Albion fans, Jimmy was transferred to Queen of the South in September 1961 for a fee of £1,000.

Jimmy later became coach and then manager of Aberdeen in the early 1970’s. He finally returned to his footballing roots as general manager of Manchester United, earning a Testimonial against Manchester United a couple of years ago.
