Superheroes Number 29 - Tommy Martin

Tommy Martin had three separate spells with Stirling Albion. He started out as a youngster with Tollcross YMCA and Shettleston Juniors in Glasgow before signing for Hearts, where he spent seven seasons. He first joined Albion on loan towards the end of season 1948/49 and three goals in four games helped us to secure promotion to the top flight. Martin was signed on a permanent basis later in 1949 for a then club record fee, and was an outstanding performer in 1949/50 as Albion made their debut in the highest level. However, despite Martin’s contribution on the left wing, Albion were relegated and Martin left the club. His wages were too much for the B Division, and he preferred to remain in full-time football. Albion sold him to Doncaster Rovers where he spent a couple of seasons before joining Nottingham Forrest. In 1955 he moved on again to Hull City. In the late 1950’s Martin returned to Scotland as player coach with ambitious Highland League side Rothes, helping them to the Highland League title in 1959. Albion brought him back to Annfield in 1959/60 as Player-Coach.
