Superheroes Number 27 - John Moffat

Very few players spanned the five year gap between the demise of King’s park and the birth of Stirling Albion. King’s park played their last game in 1940, and Albion were formed after the end of World War Two, playing their first game in August 1945.

One such player was left-half John Moffat, who had played for Brentford, Dundee and Airdrie – as well as King’s park in the pre-war days. He was signed by Tom Ferguson for King’s Park in 1939, and again for the same manager in 1945 for Stirling Albion.

John played in the first ever Albion competitive game against Edinburgh City in August 1945 and in the first Scottish league match against Dundee ‘A’ on year later.

He was a wing-half of the ‘old school’, concentrating more on defensive duties than on getting forward. He did, however, manage to score 5 goals in his 72 appearances for Albion as we climbed from the Eastern League to Division C and then to Division B.

John’s days for playing at the top level were past and he was released by the club in 1949, after promotion to Division A. John’s part in the rise to prominence should never be forgotten.

His cousin, Walter Moffat, was a goalkeeper with Albion for a spell in 1952/53, and his grandson Alan played as a trialist for our reserves a couple of years ago. He now plays for Dunipace juniors and is attracting attention from senior scout.
