Superheroes Number 26 - Bobby Wilson Albion’s rise through the divisions of Scottish Football in the late 1940’s was one of the great romantic stories of the time. One of our key players in that rise was Bobby Wilson, a right half signed from Airdrie in 1947. Bobby was a former schoolboy international and played alongside present Albion chairman Peter McKenzie at Airdrie. He learned his football with Larkhall Thistle, but only fully developed once he had joined Stirling Albion in November 1947. He went straight into the Albion side and was a regular through 1947/48 and 1948/49, helping Albion to promotion at the end of that season. He did not play as regularly in the 1949/50 Division A season, but was restored as a regular following relegation for 1950/51. He hardly figured at all in 1951/52 and in September 1952 he was transferred to Workington Town. His stay in England was brief, as he returned to Scotland to coach Larkhall Thistle. Bobby’s contribution to Albion’s rise in the late 40’s is seldom recognised. He was a real “wing half” – expected to defend when necessary and support the forwards if required – the forerunner of the midfield player. Bobby combined the necessary qualities for this play – strength and bravery to win the ball, and style and class to use it effectively. In total he played 111 games for Albion’s first team, scoring 10 goals. |
