Superheroes Number 23 - Gordon Arthur

As goalkeepers go, Gordon Arthur is up amongst the best in the history of Stirling Albion. Originally with Dundee as a youngster, Gordon was released by them and joined Fife side Dundonald Bluebell. Albion signed him on a delayed transfer form, and he was drafted in for his debut in 1977/78 for a midweek game at Dumfries, when regular goalie George Young was unavailable. Gordon was called up to Annfield for 1978/79, starring in the Reserve side that won the Reserve League (East). He played a couple of first team games that season.

The sale of George Young to Rangers in August 1979 opened the door for Gordon to stake his claim as first-choice goalkeeper. He accepted the chance, and quickly won the hearts and minds of Albion fans with a string of inspired performances.

Gordon held onto the first team jersey throughout 1979/80, 1980/81, 1981/82 and 1982/83. In 1983/84 he shared the first team duties with new signing Andy Graham from Dundee United.

Gordon joined Partick Thistle on loan for a short period in 1984, but was recalled shortly afterwards. In August 1984 he was transferred to Dumbarton, with whom he continued to further his career – playing in the First Division. He later moved to Raith Rovers and subsequently to Forfar and Montrose.

Gordon won Scotland Youth and B International caps. He was an outstanding shot-stopper, and arguably the best goalkeeper Albion have ever had.
