HISTORY OF STIRLING ALBION F.C. Season 1972/73
Season Review
The editor recalls season 72/73 as the last of the big crowds for Stirling Albion matches. Sure we've had big crowds since then but only for one-off matches. Back then we could still pull out the best part of 2500 fans for a number of games with up to 1500 travelling away.
The League Cup section ended with a midweek match at East Fife. Both teams had a chance of qualifying and 2565 turned up. We started the league season with 8 straight wins and drew crowds of 2905 against Cowdenbeath and then 4079 against Dunfermline. 2497 watched a drawn Scottish Cup tie at home to Arbroath with 3423 at the replay. Albion's promotion hopes finally crumbled in a midweek draw at East End Park watched by 8140 - Dunfermline probably wouldn't get that number for Celtic or Rangers now. 2139 v Hamilton Accies; 1937 against Brechin City - great days!
Perhaps Albion's second half collapse that season drove supporters away of perhaps it was the period of sterile, negative football that followed, but these crowds are unlikely to ever be repeated.
