Stranraer were promoted alongside ourselves last season and are now well-placed for a further promotion to Division One. The credit for that is due in large part to manager Neil Watt who has made a tremendous impact since taking over at Stair Park. The locale...It's a long way down to Stranraer and it's not really that brilliant once you get there. Don't go early for the shops. Stranraer is a ferry port and such towns are seldom pleasing on the eye. The area around the ground is fine with Stair Park located in the eponymous public park. The team... Stranraer's greatest strength is their consistency and most of their team have missed only a few games over the past two years. Many people thought that the loss of star striker Michael Moore to St Johnstone during the close season would be a mortal blow to the side. However, Davie Graham (top class sales assistant in USC of the Thistle Centre) has filled the gap most effectively. His individual goal at Forthbank earlier in the season was without doubt one of the finest efforts on the ground since it opened. He ran through the entire Albion defence, from the half way line to the penalty box before placing a shot past Hogarth into the net. Earlier this month Stranraer turned down a £50,000 bid from Gretna for the nippy striker. The travel...As stated above, it is a long way to Stranraer. After Ayr the road is long and winding. Between Glasgow and Ayr the A77 is one giant construction site. In Glasgow the M8 and M77 can resemble a car park and before you even get there you have to negotiate Auchenkilns. This is not the most relaxing of journeys but don't let that put you off. It is possible to go by train although you may have a long wait in Stranraer before you can get back. The station is at the end of the pier (the far end, out in the sea that is). The ground...Segregation has been applied for some recent Albion visits. Lat season this probably caused some bother as the fans congregated on either side of the fence and traded good-natured insults. Sadly a minority of the home support choose to fortify their insults with small change. Enter by the turnstile to the left of the ground as you approach. Albion fans can sit in the old stand or stand behind the goal as they please. The fans...Despite success over the past couple of years Stranraer's core home support is still around the 450 mark. All credit to them for their passionate support of their local team and much respect to those who travel regularly to watch their team away from home. It's bad enough making that journey twice a year. Refreshment...Nice sausage rolls from the garden shed in the away end of the ground. |
